Kandhamal: Normal life came to a standstill across G Udaygiri block in the district today following a 12-hour bandh call given by BJP over a 14-point charter of demands.

While markets wore a deserted look with traders keeping their shutters down during the bandh, vehicles stayed largely off the roads. Similarly, schools and colleges along with other educational organizations also remained closed.

The BJP called bandh was later supported by G Udaygiri Bar Association and Trader’s Association due to which it turned out to be total. However, no violence was reported during the protests today.

“The dawn to dusk bandh called by BJP and supported by the G Udaygiri Bar association and Trader’s Association is successful. People are conscientiously extending their support to the bandh as our party has taken up some basic issues of the Block which are yet to be addressed by the State Government,” said Anil Kumar Pattanik, President, G Udaygiri BJP unit.

“The G Udaygiri block is reeling under plethora of problems and the State Government has turned a blind eye to those. While there is crunch of doctors in hospital, absence of principals in colleges and even unavailability of officials in Tehsil and Block offices, no steps are being taken to fulfill those vacancies. We demand immediate appointment of staffs in these vacant posts along with setting up of a bus stand, public toilet and parking lot in the area,” he added.
