Paradip: Taking a potshot at the BJP leaders both at the Centre and the State over the Mahanadi issue ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled Odisha visit tomorrow, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today alleged that they are only shedding crocodile tears.

While addressing a massive gathering at the valedictory program of the Mahanadi Suraksha Abhiyan which concluded today at the Biju Maidan here, the BJD Supremo was of the opinion that the BJP leaders in Odisha are actually supporting the Chhattisgarh Government over its barrage construction upstream Mahanadi.

“The people of Odisha have understood the double standard approach of the BJP leaders,” said Naveen.

Naveen claimed, Mahanadi Suraksha Abhiyan is no more confined to a political movement and has rather taken shape of a people’s movement.

Speaking on the commitment of the ruling BJD towards saving Mahanadi, which happens to be the lifeline of the state, the Odisha CM claimed his party is not fighting for the water only, it wants to save the river instead.

“Our fight is not for water only, the fight is aimed at saving the life of Mahanadi. If we really want to save Mahanadi we should work towards maintaining the water level along its 500 km basin during summer season,” said Naveen.

“Moreover, if Mahanadi gets protected then Satkosia, Chilika and Bhitarkanika eco-systems which are dependent on it would be saved,” he added.

Taking credit for the order of the Centre to form the Mahanadi tribunal Naveen said it became possible due to BJD’s continuous effort.

Mahanadi Suraksha Abhiyan which was flagged off on May 16 from Ambavona and Lakhanpur in Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts passed through 15 districts and covered around 1,600 km to conclude at Paradip today.
