BJD to raise Mahanadi, Polavaram issues in Budget Session of Parliament

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs will raise Mahanadi tribunal, Polavaram project and other issues related to the interest of Odisha during the second phase of ‘Budget Session of Parliament’ which is scheduled to begin on March 5.

A decision in this regard was taken at the BJD’s Parliamentary Party meeting held at Naveen Niwas here on Saturday. Most of the MPs of the party were present in the meeting, presided by BJD President and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

“Our MPs will make demand to expedite the process of setting up of Mahanadi Tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi River water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the second phase of  Budget Session of Parliament,” said BJD Parliamentary  party spokesman and Lok Sabha MP Kalikesh Singhdeo after the meeting.

“ We will also put pressure on the Centre to stop construction of Polavaram Project,” he added.

On his part, Berhampur MP Sidhant Mohapatra said, “We will press our demand to raise the minimum support price (MSP) on paddy to Rs 2930 per quintal against the existing price of Rs. 1559 per quintal.”

More than anything else, the meeting has decided to ask the Union Government to bring Odisha under one Railway zone as well as to expedite various Railway projects in the state.

Among other things, the BJD MPs will also ask the Modi Government to deploy more central forces in the state.
