Bengaluru FC lift first ever Hero Super cup title

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Super League (ISL) runner-up Bengaluru FC emerged champion of the first edition of Hero Super Cup by defeating I-league giant East Bengal FC by 4-1 at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday.

East Bengal forward Ansumana Kromah’s stunning overhead kick had opened the account for the team in the 28th minute. Desperate Bengaluru created several chances to level the score in the first-half itself. However, it was a magnificent header by Rahul Bheka which helped the Bengaluru FC to level the score in 38th minutes.

Later, Gurwinder Sing’s handball inside the D area in 68th minute, put East Bengal in the back foot and the referee rewarded a spot kick for Bengaluru, Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri safely netted the ball into the left corner of the box and the team took a 2-1 lead.

Dependable striker of the Bengaluru Nicolas Fedor’s (Miku) stunning finish from inside the box in the 71st minute gave a 3-1 lead.

In the 90th minute, Indian skipper Sunil jumped high to put the ball into the net with the header after Rahul Bheka placed the ball from the right wing into D area and which helped Bengaluru FC to finish the final match 4-1.

Odisha proved to be lucky ground for the Bengaluru FC, they won back to back titles in consecutive two years. Bengaluru grabbed the Federation Cup 2017 title by defeating Mohun Bagan 2-0 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

While the champion team received the trophy along with cash award of Rs 25 lakhs, runner up team was richer by Rs 15 lakhs. Miku was adjudged as the hero of the tournament award.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik attended the closing ceremony as Chief Guest and gave away the prizes.

Sports and Youth Services Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera, Secretary Visha Kumar Dev and FAO President and other dignitaries were present.

On this occasion, Patnaik announced to build a world class football stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Taking to his twitter handle, the CM said, “Congratulated champions @bengalurufc of inaugural #HeroSuperCup, participants & sports-loving fans for success of the showpiece football tournament in country. India’s emerging Sports Capital, Bhubaneswar will soon have a world-class football stadium to host international matches.”
