Angul/Dhenkanal: Adding to the incidents of elephant incursion in the state, forest officials recovered the body of a dead elephant calf and rescued another from an abandoned well in separate incidents on Tuesday.

In the first instance, forest officials spotted the carcass of a jumbo calf which was lying under suspicious conditions under Tuluka Section Compartment No.4 under Satakoshia Reserve Forest in Angul district this morning. They immediately rushed the carcass for autopsy.

The dead calf, a male one, could be around 3-4 years old, informed a forest department source.

“While the exact reason of the death behind the calf is not known, it could only be ascertained after the completion of the autopsy,” said an official.

In another incident in the neighbouring Dhenkanal district, some locals in Sabara Sahi in Jhumpudia village spotted a jumbo calf inside an abandoned well in the wee hours today.

The calf was lifted from the well with the help of a JCB machine till the afternoon. The JCB which was engaged in rescue operation by forest officials took over 4 hours to bring the calf out.

“It is suspected that the calf which would be around one-year-old had been separated from a herd last night before falling into the well,” said official of Dhenkanal Sadar Forest Range.
