Bhubaneswar: The Government of Odisha has decided to make all the 18 Marine Police Stations sanctioned by the Centre for the state functional in the next two years.

Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi briefed the media about the decision after presiding over a review meeting on coastal security at the state secretariat here on Wednesday.

Five Marine Police Stations have already been established at Paradip, Balaramgadi, Dhamra, Jamboo and Arjipalli in the first phase, said Padhi.

The rest 13 Marine Police Stations would be established at Kasafala, Talasari, Chudamani, Kasia, Talachua, Tantiapal, Bandar, Jatadharimuhan, Penthakata, Astaranga, Ramchandi Arakhakuda and Sonapur in the second phase, he added.

The Marine Police will carry out effective surveillance on illegal activities like arms smuggling, contraband articles, infiltration, unauthorised fishing, entry of anti-nationals through sea route and guard all vital installations along the Odisha coast.

Odisha has 485 kilometres of coastline along the Bay of Bengal on its east, stretching from Balasore to Ganjam.
