Balasore: The indigenously developed nuclear capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-I was test-fired off Odisha coast on Tuesday.
The Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army carried out the user trial of the missile from launchpad no-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) of Abdul Kalam Island near Balasore at 8.35 AM. Agni-I missile has already been inducted in armed forces.
The missile with a length of 4.8 m and diameter of 1.3 m, is powered by both solid and liquid propellants which imparts it a speed of 2.5 km per second.
Agni-I, having a height of 15 metres, can be launched from both road and rail mobile launchers. It weighs around 12 tonnes and can carry both conventional and nuclear payload of about 1000 kg was test-fired.
The nuclear capable Agni-I missile, which possesses a range of 700 km, is the first missile of the country’s most ambitious Agni series designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
