Angul: Tension prevailed at the Bantala Square on Badakera-Mahidharpur Road in the district in the wee hours on Thursday after members of cow protection groups tried to intercept at least 15 trucks which were trafficking cattle illegally. The cattle have been released from the trucks with the help of locals following the incident.

Members of Bantala Gau Surakhya Manch, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriaya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Sena and Bajrang Shakti Sangathan reached Bantala Square late in the night after getting a tip-off on the illegal cattle consignment and tried to intercept the trucks heading to Bhadrak from Sambalpur. However, they managed to detain only eight trucks as rest seven managed to give them a slip.

During the search it came to notice that the cattle were being transported under inhumane conditions in the vehicles. While each vehicle was carrying 40-50 cattle a number of them were also found dead inside those due to suffocation. Moreover, the drivers and helpers of the trucks also failed to produce documents necessary for such type of transports.

Police reached the spot till the morning and tried to pacify the angry locals who blamed nexus between a local youth identified as Sanjay Nayak and cops in the illegal cattle transport. They demanded stringent action against the cattle traffickers at its earliest.

Police have detained the drivers of the trucks and are investigating into the case.
