Cuttack: At least eight Goa-returned youths were admitted into the SCB Medical here on Tuesday after they developed sickness and were detected with symptoms very similar to Anthrax and Nipah infections.

The patients whose names have not been disclosed by the medical authorities have been identified as residents of Bhogarai area of Balasore district. They worked in a fast food stall in Goa for last couple of years.

“We worked in Goa for last nine years but around 10-12 days ago two of our colleagues died in a mysterious fever which doctors failed to diagnose there. We got panicked further after developing similar fever later and decided to return home for better treatment,” said an affected youth.

On the other hand the Balasore district administration has maintained that the real cause behind the sickness of the migrant workers could only be ascertained after proper medical examination.

“We got information on the return of a group of sick youths from Goa last night. They were returning by Amaravati Express and were to alight at Balasore Railway Station. The Station Master was intimated immediately on the issue and the patients were taken in an ambulance to Balasore DHH. Anything on the cause of the disease could be said only after tests are done,” said an officials of Balasore district administration last night.

However, the sick youths were shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack this morning after their condition deteriorated and placed in an isolated ward.

The required medical tests of the patients would be done today, said a doctor treating them at SCB.
