5 child labourers rescued in Nagada

Jajpur: Exposing a gloomy picture of malnutrition hit Nagada under Sukinda block here, the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) officials rescued at least five child labourers from the area on Thursday.

The children were rescued during a raid by a special task force of DCPU with assistance from Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members and Kaliapani Police in the night.

Informing on the operation, the Rural Labour Inspector Gopal Krushna Mangaraj said the rescued children, who are in 14-16 age group, have been handed over to CWC after medical examination. While one child is from Sunkinda area, rest four are residents of Nagada, he added without disclosing their identity.

“Two of the rescued children had been engaged in digging wells in Tala Nagada and Upara Nagada by a construction Contractor. The rest two had shockingly been engaged in dousing wildfire by Forest Department. We would issue a show cause notice to the guilty employers in the case soon. Legal proceedings would be undertaken after their reply,” said Mangaraj.

“The rescued children would be given vocational training as per the existing provision,” said Rita Behera, Chairperson, CWC, Jajpur.
