2 more test positive for H1N1; no. of cases now 34 in Odisha

Swine FluBhubaneswar: Two more persons tested positive for the dreaded H1N1 virus that causes swine flu today, taking the total number of positive cases in Odisha to 34.

A total of 177 samples have been tested for swine flu so far while the state reported the first death this year due to the disease yesterday.

Out of the three samples tested today, two were positive, sources in the Health department said. The two positive cases, one male (36) and one female (28) were reported from the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, they added.

Meanwhile, in a communiqué to superintendents of leading private hospitals treating swine flu cases in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack today, Pramod Kumar Meherda, Secretary of the Health &  Family Welfare department stressed the importance of putting in place separate screening facilities/isolation wards, along with ventilator support for patients suffering from avian influenza.

“The facility should be manned by trained staff with proper infection control precaution,” the letter said reminding the hospital authorities about the advisory issued by World Health Organisation (WHO) and Govt. of India on vaccination of doctors, staff sisters, support staff and the crew of ambulances directly involved in management of patients.

The Health Secretary has reminded the hospital authorities of the need to submit details of all patients admitted and undergoing treatment in their facilities on a daily basis.
