2 girl students die of jaundice in Kandhamal; 23 affected

Jaundice, OdishaPhulbani: Two girl students died and 23 others were confirmed as having contracted the dreaded hepatitis A virus in the hostels of Lingagarh Girls High School in Kandhamal district of Odisha on Thursday.

The deceased students are identified as Kanchan Digal and Amisha Pradhan . They were admitted to the G. Udaygiri Hospital in a critical condition. The affected students have left the hostel and moved to their homes for treatment.

Talking to Kalinga TV, a guardian of one of the jaundice affected students on condition of anonymity, “Drinking water facilities are  very poor in this  residential school run by the SC & ST department of the State Government . The students are taking contaminated water and they often suffer from stomach infections.”

Meanwhile, SC & ST Affairs Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi today rushed to the school to take stock of the incident.

Jaundice most often occurs as a result of an underlying disorder that either causes overproduction of bilirubin or prevents the liver from disposing it of. Contaminated water is considered the main source of infection. .
