Berhampur: New Year picnic turned tragic for two engineering students after they were swept into the sea by high waves and went missing at Pati-Sonepur beach near Gopalpur on Sea in Ganjam district on Monday.
The missing duo has been identified as Pradeep Mohanty of Kumbharsahi and Ajay Suansia of Dheugan village near Aska. They were students of computer science in a Chennai-based engineering college and were holidaying at home since December 28.
Pradeep and Ajay along with a group of friends went to Pati-Sonapur beach for picnic last afternoon and took bath in the sea. However, the duo was swept into the deep water by high waves subsequently.
After the fellow picnickers called up Aska Police and informed about the incident, they launched a search operation off the coast with the help of fire brigade teams later in the day. ODRAF teams were also brought into action this morning and were engaged in the search operation.
However, police remained empty-handed till this report was being filed.
