Balasore: At least two persons were injured in a bid to shoo away a wild elephant from their orchard at Baunshabania village under Raj-Nilagiri police limits here last night, after the pachyderm attacked them.

The injured have been identified as Manas Mohanty and Kamala Kanta Jena.

Manas spotted a wild pachyderm in his orchard last evening which was suspected to have sneaked into the village from Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary to graze on paddy crops. He immediately swung into action and tried to drive away the animal. He was later joined by Kamalakanta.

Much to their dismay the elephant went berserk and chased the duo to a distance before badly trampling the right leg of Manas. The elephant also lifted Kamalakanta with its trunk and threw to a distance.

Badly injured, the duo were rescued by some locals who succeeded in driving away the elephant from the spot later.

They were rushed to the Nilagiri CHC and then shifted to Balasore Hospital due to critical condition.
