Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has decided to close at least 18 jails following less number of prisoners lodged in those confinements.

According to sources, the state government has decided to shutdown 18 jails in first phase to lessen the administrative and other expenditures in the jails where inadequate number of prisoners are lodged across Odisha.

While the inmates and jail employees of the prisons which will be closed will be shifted to other prisons, different government buildings including schools and colleges will be set up in place of the jails that will be closed.

Notably, there are total 91 jails including one open jail in Odisha with capacity of around 20,000 prisoners.
