Sambalpur: Normal life came to a standstill in Hirakud area in the district starting from the morning today following a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by BJP over death of a local youth in accident with a garbage collection van in the locality last night.

While schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained closed during the bandh observation which started from morning 6 AM, shops and business establishments also downed the shutters.

Commuters in the Hirakud Municipality area had a tough time as bus services through the route were cancelled during the bandh in view of any untoward incident.

Notably, two back to back road accidents in which at least two youths were killed triggered widespread resentment in Hirakud area yesterday. Locals staged road blockade by keeping the dead body of one deceased identified as Arun Yadav after he was mowed down by a Hyva engaged in garbage collection in the noon. The situation deteriorated further as another youth was also killed after being hit by a vehicle of Hindalco Company at around 8 PM in the evening on the same day.

BJP, which joined the protest later called for a 12-hour bandh in Hirakud area today demanding setting up of proper waste management system as well as suitable compensation to the accident victims.
