Angul: Normal life crippled across Athmallik block in Angul district on Friday following a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the traders’ union demanding safety and security for traders in the area.

While all shops and business establishments remained shut during the bandh observation, the consumers had a tough time starting from morning 6 AM. The agitating traders also held protest meetings in Athmallik Market and blocked roads by burning tyres.

The Athmallik Traders’ Union observed the bandh protesting a loot incident which took place in the Athmallik Market yesterday in which unidentified looters snatched away the cash bag carrying over Rs 10 lakh from a trader identified as Mahesh Agarwal, in the morning. He was preparing to lift the shutters of his cement shop when a group of four bike-borne miscreants looted him at gun point.

The bandh observers are demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and 24-hour police patrolling in Athmallik Market area.

An investigation is underway in the incident and the police are yet to reach the culprits.
