beefSambalpur: Tension ran high in Sarlakani Square under Dhanupali police limits in the district at early morning today, after Bajarang Dal activists intercepted an auto-rickshaw and seized one quintal of beef from it. Police reached the spot and arrested the driver of the auto-rickshaw.

The arrested auto driver has been identified as Raza Ali.

After getting information on beef transportation by an auto-rickshaw from Sunapali to neighbouring Bargarh district, Bajrang Dal activists chased it near Sakhipada and intercepted at Sarlakani Square at around 5am today. After conducting a search, they found beef sacks kept inside the vehicle and roughed up the driver.

Later on, the Bajrang Dal activists and locals staged a road blockade on NH 6 by burning tyres, protesting against the illegal transportation of beef in the area.

The blockade was removed only after Dhanupali Police reached the spot and arrested the auto rickshaw driver. Police seized the beef packets and assured for action on transporters in the district.

Alleging the police for being soft on beef traders, the Bajrang Dal activists warned to intensify their stir in coming days.
