farmer suicideDhenkanal: One farmer died and another turned critical in separate incidents of suicide attempt in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday due to their inability to repay the loans they had taken for farming. The incidents came to fore at a time when the district is reeling under an acute drought.

The first incident of suicide was reported from the Belatikiri village under Dhenkanal Sadar Block this morning in which the victim Ashwini Sahoo (50) committed suicide by hanging himself from the branch of a tree in the backyard of his house. Spotted by the family members in the morning, he was rushed to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) immediately where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sahoo’s family members have claimed that he remained under immense mental stress over the last few days because of his inability to repay the bank loan and the money borrowed from neighbours and village money lenders. As the paddy crop raised by him on 4 acres of land was damaged due to drought, he lost his mental equilibrium and took the extreme step, family members said.

Another farmer identified as Artabandhu Rout of Khandiabandha village in the district attempted suicide by consuming poison this morning. Rout, who had also cultivated paddy with the help of a loan taken from various banks and village money lenders, suffered crop loss due to drought. He visited his farm land at around 6 o’clock in the morning while all others in the family were asleep and consumed pesticides there. He was rushed to the Dhenkanal DHH where his condition is stated to be critical.
