Walking Bookfairs cafe by Akshaya & Shatabdi By Tazeen Qureshy

Bhubaneswar: Bibliophiles in the City have got a reason to cheer as Walking Bookfairs, a mobile book shop, has opened a new book café, one of its kind in the State, which offers an array of snacks and beverages as you shuffle through award-winning books in the shop.

Started by book lovers Akshaya and Shatabdi, Walking Bookfairs was earlier a mobile book shop operating in a second hand ambulance. Later, investing on minimal basics, including a couple of benches, flower pots and endless chai from the neighbouring eatery, Akshaya and Shatabdi started a book shack in Jaydev Vihar area. The shop had to be closed owing to discrepancies in land ownership and was shifted to Khandigiri area, where the duo has opened this new café.

“The concept of our book shop is to encourage people to read. We don’t force people to buy books. We ask them to come, flip through books, get a feel of it and enjoy reading. So, we thought why not serve some food so that people can enjoy reading,” said Akshaya, co-owner of Walking Bookfairs.

The new book café will sell basic food items like sandwiches, toasts, fresh juice, tea, coffee. Occasionally, there would be some wine too!

Though the concept of book café already exists in the City, with Oxford bookstore having a ‘Cha Bar,’ Walking Bookfairs café would be the first desi café in the State.

“This is another way to promote books. Perhaps, people will like this concept,” said Akshaya, who had left his job at a leading book store to start Walking Bookfairs.
