road blockadeAngul: Vehicular movement came to a grinding halt on NH 149 near Sarang in the district on Tuesday after hundreds of locals staged a road blockade on the Brahmani Jatia Bridge to press their demand for its renovation.

The road blockade organised by Anchalik Surakhya Parishad witnessed participation of locals from villages like Sarang, Santapada and Dasanali. The blockaders claimed that repeated demand for renovation of the Jatia Bridge, which has turned into a death trap for commuters, has fallen on deaf ears.

“The bridge is around 50 year old and in a dilapidating state due to lack of maintenance. We are staging a road blockade to draw the attention of the administration which is not paying heed to our demands,” said a woman blockader venting out ire against the government.

“The guide walls of the bridge need an immediate repairing and we are demanding for it repeatedly over last one year. As neither the district administration nor the NHAI is taking step in this issue, we chose to hold a road blockade today,” said a local.

On the other hand, no official of the district administration had reached the spot till this report was being filed. Only a few police officials were seen trying to pacify the angry locals in a bid to remove the road blockade.
