Nuapara: In a gruesome incident, a couple was allegedly set ablaze by their niece at Padampur village under Khadiala Block of the district late on Saturday night.
The couple has been identified as Hema Patel and her husband Kasi Patel.
While Hema succumbed to her injuries, her husband survived severe burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at Khadiala Sub-Divisional Hospital.
According to the reports, the mishap took place when the couple were sleeping inside their house when their niece -Chaitanya Patel – allegedly set ablaze their house causing Hema’s death on the spot.
Some locals rushed to the spot after hearing the cry of the couple for help.
They caught hold of the accused and informed the local police about the matter. Besides, they rushed Kasi to the hospital while his wife had already died.
Khadiala Police has started an investigation into the matter. They are interrogating the accused, who is said to be mentally unstable, to ascertain the reason behind the crime.
The woman’s body has also been sent to the hospital for postmortem.
