GST on mass consumption items reduced to 18%

GSTGuwahati: The GST Council on Friday slashed tax rate on a wide range of mass use items from chewing gums to detergents to 18 per cent from current 28 per cent.

“Only 50 items of luxury goods to face 28% rate,” Bihar finance minister Sushil Modi told reporters on the sidelines of 23rd GST Council meeting, headed by Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley, here.

“Now all types of chewing gum, chocolates, preparation for women cosmetics, shaving and after-shave items, deodorants, washing powder detergent, and marble… these items have been put in the 18% category,” Modi added.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), implemented from July 1, has five tax slabs of 0 per cent, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent.
