Savitri Brata in OdishaBhubaneswar: Savitri Brata is being celebrated across the state on Thursday.

On this occasion, married Hindu Odia women wake up early in the morning, take bath and go to temples wearing new sarees and ornaments, to offer special prayers for their husbands. After coming home from the temple, they bow before their husbands and seek their blessings. Many women also call a priest and observe Savitri brata at home.

They observe fasting from sunrise to sunset and pray for their husband’s long life and well being.

The fast is dedicated to Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from being taken away by Yamaraj, the god of death.

According to the legend, Savitri, the beautiful daughter of King Aswapati of Madra Desa, selected Satyavan, a prince in exile who was living in the forest with his blind father Dyumatsen, as her life partner. She left the palace and lived with her husband and the in-laws in the forest. As a devoted wife and daughter-in-law, she went to great lengths to take care of them.

One day while cutting wood in the jungle, Satyavan’s head reeled and he fell down from a tree. Then Yama, the death God, appeared to take away Satyavan’s soul.

A devastated Savitri pleaded with Yamraj to spare her husband. When Yama did not relent and started walking away with Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him. Moved by the devotion of Savitri, Yama returned the life of her husband. Soon Satyavan regained his lost kingdom.
