Ratha Jatra begins amid tight security, Chariot pulling at 2.30 PM

Chariot festival Puri: The world famous annual Ratha Jatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings began amid religious flavour and tight security in the pilgrim town of Odisha on Sunday.

Braving rains and bad weather, lakhs of devotees arrived in the holy town to witness the biggest festival of Odisha that kicked off with Mangala Alati at 6 AM followed by the Mailama at 6.10 AM and Tadapalagi and Rosa Homa 6.30 AM.

Till the filling of this report, it was the time for the Pahandi ritual 9.30 AM.

After the completion of the all the rituals the majestic chariots – Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra) and Darpadalan (Subhadra) will be pulled at 2.30 PM, said sources.

The entire city has been put under heavy security blanket.

As many as 127 platoons of police force have been deployed in the town for the smooth conduct of the festival.

Twelve SPs, 32 Additional SPs, 68 DSP, 136 Inspectors and 646 Sub-inspectors will oversee the security arrangement.

Two units each of Rapid Action Forces, SOG and ODRAF have been pressed into service.

Likewise, three teams of Odisha Swift Action Force (OSAF), a newly raised force, also have been deployed by the state police for better crowd control during the car festival.

Apart from Puri, the grand festival is also being celebrated across the world.
