Many families in the Malkangiri district had to spend the night on Saturday outside, as their shelters were damaged due to the Kal Baisakhi or Nor’westers.
It was expected that the Nor’westers would bring some relief to the people of the district from the scorching heat wave. However, it added to their woes by causing severe damage to asbestos and perspex roofing of their houses.
While their houses were blown away by the speed wind, the corns and food materials which they had preserved in their houses were spoiled by the heavy rain accompanied by hail stones. Some people even had to sleep under the trees along with their toddlers.
With the hope of getting some assistance from the district administration they are now reconstructing their houses with the debris left post the Nor’westers.
The high speed winds also snapped electric wires at several places causing disruption of power supply at many places of the district.
