Violence continues in Bhadrak as peace committee talks fail

Bhadrak, Apr 07: Despite the promulgation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC, communal violence continued to prevail in the town for the second consecutive day as the peace committee meeting among heads of religious groups reportedly failed on Friday.

Sources said, the irate mobs ransacked many vehicles including the police vehicles. Besides, they torched many shops at various places and burn tyres on the road in the town.

In another important development, Gyana Ranjan Das, Commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation, has been appointed as the new Collector of Bhadrak.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Asit Tripathy, DGP K B Singh, ADG (Law and Order) and RDC (Central) have rushed to Bhadrak.

As many as 15 platoons of policemen have been deployed in the town to take control of the situation.

Violence had erupted in the town yesterday following some objectionable remarks on Lord Ram, Goddess Sita on social media.

The Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists had blocked the main road by burning tyres protesting the remarks. Besides, they gheraoed the Town police station demanding the arrest of the persons involved in the incident.

A police complaint was also lodged by the Bhagat Sena Ram Navmi Samiti in this regard.
