Satya Pal Malik takes oath as Acting Governor of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik on Wednesday took oath as the acting Governor of Odisha. He has been administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Justice Vineet Saran here at a special function in Raj Bhavan.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, several Ministers of State Government, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and many other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Earlier, Malik was welcomed by the Chief Minister at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in the state capital. He was also accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the airport.

President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday directed Malik to hold the additional charge of Governor of Odisha as the statutorily five-year tenure of Odisha Governor Dr SC Jamir ended on March 21.

71-year old Malik will hold the additional charge as Odisha Governor until a new Governor is appointed.

Malik, who was BJP’s national Vice-President before his appointment as the Governor of Bihar, has also served as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism.

Born on 25 December 1946, in Hisawada village of  Baghpat district in western Uttar Pradesh, Malik began his political career in the 1970s as a member of the UP state legislative Assembly.

The veteran leader got elected from Aligarh Lok Sabha constituency on a Janata Dal ticket in 1989. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha for two terms.
